Location

The event is north of Graytown, 150 kms or 1.8 hrs from Melbourne CBD. This is the land of the Taungurung people, who looked after this land until it was settled by outsiders after gold was discovered in the 1800s. Graytown is a shadow of its former self with only a few local homes set back from the main roads. In 1868 when gold was discovered at nearby Moonlight Flat, Graytown was settled as over 30,000 miners came to seek their fortune. Today most visitors would pass through unaware that a town ever existed. The area has a wealth of local history and rich natural beauty which lies hidden in the forest. Seek and ye will find.  Many old gold mining sites scar the terrain and a heritage listed cemetery is present. The area also boasts relics from WWII: Camp 6, a prisoner of war camp (PoW), housed German crew members from the German raider Kormoran, which sank the HMAS Sydney off Western Australia; alongside Italians and Finns. A vibrant display of nature’s colours awaits together with the distinctively shaped Austral Grasstrees which dot the landscape north east of Graytown.  The more observant teams are likely to spot an emu or two in addition to the plentiful Gray Whroo grey kangaroos.

Many Grass Trees will be found on the course

Austral Grasstrees to be found throughout the course.

Course

The unique bushland of the Heathcote Graytown National Park and Redcastle Graytown State Forest has been host to many great rogaines over the years. We hope we have set a fair, enjoyable event with the right amount of challenge.

The course is mostly open native bush, with some areas of thicker vegetation that may slow teams’ progress. Gently undulating to very subtle terrain will test their navigational skills, team work and strategy for determining night time checkpoints. There is an extensive road and track network throughout the course: not all tracks are marked on the map and the position of many tracks marked cannot be verified (you have been warned). The Hash House is centrally located with four main loops and many variations of route choice possible. This means there are ample options for 8 hr teams and for 24 hr teams who may come in for a quick feed or some sleep. This is a gentle introduction to teams who are doing a 24 hour for the first time.

VRA Bus

Take the VRA Bus and avoid the risk if driving home.  Planned to depart from Southern Cross Station on Saturday morning at 7:30am (Or later by agreement) and depart the Hash House between 1 and 1:30 Sunday to return to Southern Cross Station.   Maps are issued on the bus at 9 am so no need to be concerned with not arriving by 9am to get maximum planning time.   The cost is heavily subsidized at $25 return or one way.

Accommodation

Bush camping will be available at the Hash House site from Friday evening until Monday. Camping and parking will only be permitted in selected areas due to Parks Victoria permit requirements. Fires are only to be lit in the specified area and no pets are allowed. Portable toilets will be provided. Please bring water and food for Friday until Saturday’s lunch. The Hash House will only provide food from 5 pm Saturday until approximately 12:30 pm Sunday. Graytown has no accommodation or other services. Nagambie and Heathcote are the nearest towns with accommodation and supplies as well as excellent bakeries and local wineries.     Also note the Heathcote's annual wine and food festival is on the same weekend.  The 24hr course does not reach Heathcote.  8hr Rogainers could combine it to make a weekend of it.   https://www.heathcotewinegrowers.com.au/festival

Map

The map is 725 X 540 mm, 1:30,000 scale, 10 m black contours, pre-marked checkpoints, colour, digital printed. Gridlines are aligned to magnetic north and are 1 km apart. Magnetic declination is 11.2 degrees. Non-waterproof paper will be used so contact or a map bag is necessary.
