Day/Night Navigation Training

DAY/NIGHT NAVIGATION TRAINING - SATURDAY 6th OCTOBER 2018

Time: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm - (Please meet at 3:30 pm for team introduction and instructor assignment)

Come to the VRA day/night training event and learn from the experts!

 

Please note: To enter any VRA event you must have a member number – you can create a member record for no charge.  You only pay when you enter an event.

Early registration is advised as there will be a maximum of 30 trainees. No entries will be accepted after 11:59pm Thursday 27th September  (or earlier if fully booked which often occurs for training days).   Also note online entries will be closed for about a week around the Vic Champs event.  Check here for date details.

A fee of $10 applies to all participants (including juniors) 

If you are the leader of a junior group such as scouts and interested in entering please phone to discuss limitation we have training Junior groups. 

 

What to bring:

Day pack, lunch, snacks, water and come dressed appropriately for the weather (check Bureau of Meteorology website on the day prior) and wear comfortable, sturdy footwear.

Optional equipment to bring along:

  • A compass (1:25000 or 1:30000 only) with a bezel if you have one.
  • Gaiters
  • Bring a pen or pencil,
  • note book,
  • a length of string (about 50 cms) but not mandatory,
  • camera

Loan compasses are available if needed.

Program:

We will discuss Maps, map grids, topography (contour lines), compasses and compass bearings, using a compass correctly, navigation by compass, line of sight and topography, and how to combine these to best effect

We will practice map reading, setting a compass bearing, route planning, total distance calculation (intended to travel), holding a compass correctly before setting out in teams to find control points marked within the reserve.

Reading contour lines, use of a compass, pacing (counting) to measure distance, combining sight, topography and compass to best effect and tips for travelling through the bush will all be covered as we go out in teams with an instructor to navigate to marker points laid out in the Lysterfield Park.

We will also concentrate on additional night navigation techniques including the value of pace counting & use of attack points.

Final online entry will close 11:59pm Thursday 27th September  (or when fully subscribed to 30 participants) to allow us to finalise the administration for the event

  2. You can enter as a team if you wish to be grouped together on the day. This also makes payment and tracking more efficient
  3. You may enter as an individual (disregard the entry page that it seems to be set up for a team – enter your name as sole entrant)
