CANCELLED Navigation Training Day


Both the Planning Strategy Day and April Navigation Training Day are cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns.   We have another Navigation Training Day planned for 6-September which may or may not run.


Would you like to learn Rogaining basics?
What about polishing the skills you already have?
Come to the VRA training day and get tuition from the experts!

Date: Sunday 26th April, Time: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm (meet at 9:30 am please for team introduction and instructor assignment)

Online event entries

Entries will open by 7-April - Link to Online Entry Page  

  Entries will close 16th April  at 11:59pm (or when fully subscribed to 30 participants)

  1. You can enter as a team if you wish to be grouped together on the day. This also makes payment and tracking more efficient
  2. You may enter as an individual (disregard the entry page that it seems to be set up for a team – enter your name as sole entrant)
  3. If you are entering as an individual and you wish to be teamed up on the day with another individual(s) send me an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. (there may instances when we make smaller groups and you may not be able to be grouped as one but we will endeavour to place you amongst your friends/family
  4. Entries will not be considered as registered until the event fee has been received.  Please Bpay immediately after entering.
  5. Please Note: If under 18 participants are entered there will not be a fee listed for them in the invoice that is generated – HOWEVER for this event the fee is $10 (to cover running costs)– applies to all participants (no age exemption), so please ensure your total payment is equivalent to $10 per person
  6. Please be sure to submit your team on the entry page before closing the window see below.


Entry fee is $10 per person.  No free entry for Juniors with an adult.
Early registration is advised as there will be a maximum of 30 trainees. No entries will be
accepted after 16th April or earlier if fully booked.

What to bring:

Day pack, lunch, snacks, water and come dressed appropriately for the weather (check Bureau of Meteorology website on the day prior) and wear comfortable, sturdy footwear.

Optional equipment to bring along:

  • A compass (1:25000 or 1:30000 only) with a bezel if you have one.
  • Gaiters
  • Bring a pen or pencil,
  • note book,
  • a length of string (about 50 cms but not mandatory),
  • camera

Loan compasses are available if needed.



We will discuss Maps, map grids, topography (contour lines), compasses and compass bearings, using a compass correctly, navigation by compass, sight and topography and how to combine these to best effect

We will practice map reading, setting a compass bearing, route planning, total distance calculation (intended to travel), holding a compass correctly and pace counting before setting out in teams to find control points marked within the reserve.

Reading contour lines, use of a compass, pacing to measure distance, combining sight, topography and compass to best effect and tips for travelling through the bush will all be
covered as we go out in teams with an instructor to navigate to marker points laid out in the reserve.


Final Instructions

Please ensure you have downloaded and completed & signed the Event Indemnity Form prior to the day ready for handing in at Registration.
